WORD of the DAY

They were overjoyed at seeing the star,  and on entering the house they saw the child with Mary his mother. They prostrated themselves and did him homage. Then they opened their treasures and offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.  And having been warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they departed for their country by another way.

(Matthew 2: 10-12)

How shall I live this Word?

In a world where we often walk without direction, almost prone with our eyes to the ground, and we risk daily to collapse under the weight of the suffocating determinism that common thinking offers.  It stifles creativity and inventiveness. The now infinite sectors of science are rigid in many laws of knowledge, closed as dead ends.

All this makes us feel nostalgia for the liberating call of the Gospel to the forces of creation, which mysteriously are released by manifesting a partnership between the energies of the stars and the wandering of humans in search of meaning. We see the sky, its eternal laws, and its dominion over human destiny, and we need to remember that even for each of us, a star up there awaits our gaze to show us the way as it did for the Magi.

Today I will take time to indulge my imagination.  I will go out and take a walk, be aware of the fresh air on my face, and find amid creation those energies that have been dispersed in the worries and duties that weigh down my life.

The voice of A. J. Herschel, Rabbi

Absolute amazement is for the intelligence of the reality of God what clarity and distinction are for understanding mathematical ideas. Without wonder, we remain deaf to the sublime.
