Second Sunday after Christmas

FRIENDS and SERVANTS of the WORD
Second Sunday after Christmas

WORD of the DAY

He came to what was his own, but his own people did not accept him.
But to those who did accept him he gave power to become children of God, to those who believe in his name. (John 1: 11-12)

How shall I live this Word?

In some of our inland towns I still see on the doors of the historic center, the house keys inserted in the door lock. Anyone can enter. It is these simple and welcoming environments that warm my heart in the ongoing Christmas season. The good news of the coming of Jesus into the world travels more easily through the narrow and populated streets, climbs up the irregular and narrow stairways flanking damp walls half deprived of the plaster. It is being welcomed in rustic environments, enlivened by a hearth, where the essentials of life help us to recognize the value of things and to call each one with the right name, without words. I see Jesus in the faces and smiles of those who still hope and are busy, and I remember that He chose this humanity, this swarm of life and industriousness to be with us, in a tent that invites us to enter and feel at home.

Today I make the commitment to reflect with a poor person, overcoming any initial reluctance. She/he will be poor because lacking money, because lacking culture, amiability, means, but … will surely have something to give me and I will return enriched!

The voice of Silvano Fausti
Human beings are what they give.
