THIRD SATURDAY OF ADVENT

FRIENDS and SERVANTS of the WORD

THIRD SATURDAY OF ADVENT

CHRISTMAS NOVENA

December 21, 2019

WORD of the DAY

Elizabeth, filled with the holy Spirit,  cried out in a loud voice and said, “Most blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb.  And how does this happen to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?  For at the moment the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the infant in my womb leaped for joy.  Blessed are you who believed that what was spoken to you by the Lord would be fulfilled.

     (Luke 1: 42-45)

How shall I live this Word?

Two women meet.  Two women indwelled by the life that is about to be born.  Between them, there is the Spirit who places them in relationship, revealing the great proclamation of the Incarnation.  “Blest are you among women!”

In the womb of a girl the Messiah entered the home of Elizabeth.  Then little John, destined to be His witness, although still encircled by the womb of his mother, exults with joy.  It is an encounter of exaltation and of joy that will not only reach the encircling hills, but will fill with awe the centuries to come, because God has made His home in humanity.  Thus, the proclamation, “blest is she who believed” in the great and miraculous prodigy.  Emmanuel, God with us, kept faith with His promise.

In prayer I will ask Jesus to give me the grace of being able to bring Him with me to every encounter so that I can give His joy to everyone.

The voice of St. John Chrysostom, Church Father

Behold what is extraordinary in this mystery.  (John) is not yet born and speaks by leaping in his mother’s womb…he cannot bear remaining closed when the Lord comes.  He has not yet been born and yet he indicates the sun.
