WORD of the DAY

The tax collectors and sinners were all drawing near to listen to him, but the Pharisees and scribes began to complain, saying, “This man welcomes sinners and eats with them.” So to them he addressed this parable. “What man among you having a hundred sheep and losing one of them would not leave the ninety-nine in the desert and go after the lost one until he finds it? And when he does find it, he sets it on his shoulders with great joy and, upon his arrival home, he calls together his friends and neighbors and says to them, ‘Rejoice with me because I have found my lost sheep.”… In just the same way, I tell you, there will be rejoicing among the angels of God over one sinner who repents.” (Luke 15: 1-6/10)

How shall I live this Word?

Jesus reveals to us God’s great joy when a sinner repents, more than for the ninety-nine righteous who have no need for penitence. The also recalls the happiness of the woman who has found her lost drachma. She invites her friends and neighbors to her home to rejoice with her for having found the lost coin. These words of Jesus show God’s pleasure. Not only does the person rejoice for having returned to grace but God also rejoices with her/him!
Every time we repent, we do not only bring joy to ourselves, but we are full of happiness before God and His angels. Not only the earthly world, but also the heavenly world lives in happiness. Returning to God means loving God again and knowing we are loved by Him. God and the person rediscover themselves united in love.

Lord, thank You for Your great mercy. You are close to us at every moment of our life and You rejoice when we return to You.

The voice of St. Augustine

Do not go out, re-enter into yourself. Within us dwells the truth. And if you find your nature changeable, transcend even yourself. Go where the light of reason burns.
