WORD of the DAY

Great crowds were traveling with him, and he turned and addressed them, “If any one comes to me without hating his father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple. Whoever does not carry his own cross and come after me cannot be my disciple… In the same way, every one of you who does not renounce all his possessions cannot be my disciple.”

(Luke 14: 25-27/33)

How shall I live this Word?

Faces of Jesus

In today’s Gospel Jesus lists the conditions for being His disciple: love Him more than anything, more than ourselves and our families. It regards a love that puts God in first place, that renounces egoism and possession of things and personal affections. St. Augustine tells us we cannot live without loving but we must love with an orderly love: first God, then our neighbor, then ourselves. If we are pervaded by love, we will also be enthusiastic about living according to the Gospel of Jesus, which brings the fullness of happiness and of peace.

Being disciples means living like Jesus who taught us by His example. He loved God the Father by doing His will and He loved all of us by sacrificing Himself for our salvation.
Lord, thank You for the example You have given us. Grant that we may imitate You in Your love for God the Father and for us.

The voice of Anselm Grün, Monk Author

The meek do not judge the sinner, but console and strengthen, because knowing the suffering and problems of the disciples, they take them upon themselves and suffer with them.
