WORD of the DAY

Then he told them a parable. “There was a rich man whose land produced a bountiful harvest.  He asked himself, ‘What shall I do, for I do not have space to store my harvest?’  And he said, ‘This is what I shall do: I shall tear down my barns and build larger ones. There I shall store all my grain and other goods  and I shall say to myself, “Now as for you, you have so many good things stored up for many years, rest, eat, drink, be merry!”’ But God said to him, ‘You fool, this night your life will be demanded of you; and the things you have prepared, to whom will they belong?’  Thus will it be for the one who stores up treasure for himself but is not rich in what matters to God.”    (Luke 12: 16-21)

How shall I live this Word?

The parable presents a man who is already rich and very eager to amass more wealth.  However , his great preoccupation is where to put his abundant harvest, how to organize all he possesses.  Thus he plans to build new buildings in which to protect and preserve all his possessions.  It seems that the story of this parable is quickly going towards very good outcomes.

But here is the huge question that has roots in a truth that is certain and cannot be canceled.  Death will come unexpectedly and when the rich man least expects it.  From this certain and absolute event, comes the point of a sharp sting in the form of a question.  The things you have prepared, to whom will they belong?

Lord, make me Your disciple.  Give me a heart that seeks paths of the good connected to Your Gospel where You teach us to use the goods of this world without having possessions closed in the egoism of a heart dominated by the avid thirst for individual possessions.

THE VOICE OF MAHATMA GANDHI

There is enough in the world for human needs, but not for avidity.
