27th Sunday of Ordinary Time

WORD of the DAY

And the apostles said to the Lord, “Increase our faith… When you have done all you have been commanded, say, ‘We are unprofitable servants; we have done what we were obliged to do” (Luke 17: 5/10)

How shall I live this Word?

” We are unprofitable servants; we have done what we were obliged to do ” (Lk 17:10). The expression “unprofitable” leads us to think of “not being of use”; but another translation helps us to grasp in this word the style of Jesus: “useless” that is “without profit”, without gain. Whoever does a service is never “useless”, whether servant or slave, but can do so with a double purpose, that of self-interest.
The Gospel speaks to us of gratuitousness, of work carried out simply because we belong to Jesus and we are His, not a job that enters into the logic of giving/receiving, but into that of the free gift: “You have freely received, freely give” (Mt 10, 8). It is a question of Love, of Faith: the love received, the trust experienced, makes us free to serve as Jesus: “Increase our faith ” (Lk 10: 5).

Lord Jesus, we who are sick “of what profit are we?”, teaches us the art of gratuitousness. Help us to fix our mind and our heart “where there is true joy” and true freedom! Amen!

The Voice of Pope Francis, Morning Meditation St. Martha 11-11-14
“When I say service, I say everything: service to God in adoration, in prayer, in praise; service to others when I have to do it; service to the end, because Jesus is strong in this: “So you too, when you have done all that you have been ordained, now say we are useless servants”. Free service, without asking for anything in return.
