26th Tuesday of Ordinary Time

St. Theresa of the Child Jesus

WORD of the DAY

When the days for his being taken up were fulfilled, he resolutely determined to journey to Jerusalem, and he sent messengers ahead of him. On the way they entered a Samaritan village to prepare for his reception there, but they would not welcome him because the destination of his journey was Jerusalem. When the disciples James and John saw this they asked, “Lord, do you want us to call down fire from heaven to consume them?” (Luke 9: 51-56)

How shall I live this Word?

The scene is lively: the decisive direction of Jesus is towards Jerusalem: place of His mystery of death and resurrection. The road crossed a country inhabited by the Samaritans, hostile to the Jews for centuries.
In fact, the inhabitants did not want to let Jesus pass among them because he was directed to the city of enmity.
We seem to see the two disciples, James and John, and to hear them turn to the Lord asking Him to send down fire from heaven and consume them.
The appeal with two verbs is beautiful, only to two verbs that clearly render the position of Christ the Lord: he turned and scolded them.

Lord, make me feel more and more the strength and beauty of your being a Human-Divine person. Join me closely to You so that I may make Your own choices that never move towards violence and revenge. May I always choose the ways of peace with You and for You.

The Voice of Bishop Antonino Bello
To love, voice of the verb die, means to decentralize. Get out of yourself. Give without asking for a return. Be discreet on the edge of silence. To suffer to drop the scales of selfishness. Get out of the way when you risk compromising the peace of a home. Desire the happiness of others. Respect your destiny. And disappear when you notice that you are disturbing His mission.
