WORD of the DAY

An argument arose among the disciples about which of them was the greatest. Jesus realized the intention of their hearts and took a child and placed it by his side and said to them, “Whoever receives this child in my name receives me, and whoever receives me receives the one who sent me. For the one who is least among all of you is the one who is the greatest. (Luke 9: 46-48)

How shall I live this Word?

Jesus’ disciples fall into a pretension that displays human and spiritual immaturity. Jesus’ response ‘burns’ every wrong expectation. The smallest (not in words but with clear conviction) is truly the greatest.
Here is the reversal of a worldly mentality that also takes hold today. Jesus is indeed a liberator, teacher, and guide for us on roads of truth.

Lord, help me to cultivate humility as the measure of truth. Grant that I may understand that what counts in the Kingdom of God is knowing and accepting my littleness: limitations, fragility, weakness, and at the same time, always trusting in Your help that encourages, supports, realizes true greatness in me, which is the courage to always choose the good.

The Voice of Fr. Oreste Benzi
Human beings are mature when they are able to understand that there is mystery, that everything cannot be reduced to what they see and understand. No human wisdom can capture God and God’s thoughts cannot be human thoughts.
