WORD of the DAY

Again you have heard that it was said to your ancestors, ‘Do not take a false oath, but make good to the Lord all that you vow.’ But I say to you, do not swear at all; not by heaven, for it is God’s throne; nor by the earth, for it is his footstool; nor by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King. Do not swear by your head, for you cannot make a single hair white or black. Let your ‘Yes’ mean ‘Yes,’ and your ‘No’ mean ‘No.’ Anything more is from the evil one. (Matthew 5: 33-37)

How shall I live this Word?

The anxious search for the right words do not express so much love for the truth as the desire to awe others and bring them closer to our positions. Let us concern ourselves instead that our life be above all, an eloquent testimony of our values, aware that words, when they lose their adherence to things, lose their consistency and end up becoming dull clinking and pure ornamentation. No one will listen to us if we block the passage of the truth in our hearts. The Lord looks at the essential (to the ‘non-verbal’) and is greater than our reasoning and our discourses. The more He moves away from us, the more we try to force Him into our rhetorical schemes with lamentations, analogies, references, quotations…

Someone spoke of the ‘no’s’ that help us to grow … In fact, as Saint Paul says, not everything is of benefit. Today, placing myself in an attitude of truth towards myself, I will ask God for the ability to discern which are the realistic and generous ‘no’s’ that I am called to say in front of all the requests, more or less explicit, that come from others or from situations.

The Voice of Pope Paul VI
Contemporary people listen more willingly to witnesses than to teachers or, if they listen to teachers, it is because they are witnesses.
