WORD of the DAY

Jesus spoke to them again, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness but will have the light of life.” So the Pharisees said to him, “You testify on your own behalf, so your testimony cannot be verified.” Jesus answered and said to them, “Even if I do testify on my own behalf, my testimony can be verified, because I know where I came from and where I am going. But you do not know where I come from or where I am going… (John 8: 12-20)

How shall I live this Word?

In these artfully orchestrated accusations, almost like the general proofs of the trial that would be made against him, the Pharisees try to force Jesus into a minority, to disqualify Him as if His was an isolated voice without substance. He is an uncomfortable Jesus because He claims to listen to and follow only the Father. So not an established order around a ‘creed’, not the representatives of a hierarchy, not those who hold religious power and exercise it tyrannizing over consciences: only to Him must our eyes be turned, although still imbued with darkness. Presenting Himself as ‘light”, He reveals all the ugliness and shadows with which humans love to disguise themselves. It demands a radical choice: either with Him or against Him. Whoever walks in the light and follows Jesus will have an enlightened reason and a renewed heart to judge in a serene and impartial way: himself, his neighbor, history. Having the courage to choose the truth at the cost of being unpopular and losing one’s privileges: this is the true worship that makes every place and every meeting sacred.

Today I will turn my attention to the dynamics of my daily life and evaluate if my behavior and my words are inspired by what the ‘interior Teacher’ tells me in my heart.

THE VOICE OF Clement Alessandrino

Rejecting bad things reveals good ones; in fact, what ignorance kept tied in evil, knowledge loosens it for the good.
