FRIENDS and SERVANTS of the WORD

Thursday after Ash Wednesday, March 7, 2019

WORD of the DAY

See, I have today set before you life and good, death and evil.  If you obey the commandments of the Lord, your God, which I am giving you today, loving the Lord, your God, and walking in his ways, and keeping his commandments, statutes and ordinances, you will live and grow numerous, and the Lord, your God, will bless you in the land you are entering to possess.     (Deuteronomy  30: 15-16)

How shall I live this Word?

Choose.  This is the verb of the mature, of adults.  The ability to choose is the objective of our journeys of discernment.  It is the quality that indicates the adult person, able to distinguish, evaluate, and choose.  Even in a faith journey, the ability to choose, which we can also term discernment, defines the autonomous and responsible person.  The commandment to love does not presuppose a blind and obtuse obedience, but the active adhesion to the content of that commandment and the effort that desires to penetrate the mystery of life, safeguard it, protect it, perpetuate it.   These are the elements to distinguish good from evil, even when both present themselves in an ambiguous and confused way.

Lord, in this time of Lent help us to be aware of our capacity to love and fill our life with prophetic and courageous choices that speak of our desire to be converted and to change, not only personally, but together.

THE VOICE OF Eric-Emmanuel Schmitt, Dramatist, Writer, Essayist

A person is made of choices and circumstances.  No one has power over circumstances, but everyone has power over their choices.
