 WORD of the DAY

Then Zechariah his father, filled with the holy Spirit, prophesied, saying:

“Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel,

for he has visited and brought redemption to his people.

He has raised up a horn for our salvation

within the house of David his servant,

even as he promised through the mouth of his holy prophets from of old”.

 (Luke  1: 67-70)

How shall I live this Word?

Zachariah also receives the gift of the Spirit and from his heart as well flows a hymn of praise and of blessing, as from Elizabeth and from John.  The Spirit opens the mouth of him who was made mute because of his incredulity.  The Spirit envelops him in Love and transforms his lack of faith into trust, into adhesion to God’s will.

God’s promise is fulfilled ‘as the sun that rises from on high’, as a continual gift, as a visit to His people.  Literally, God looks down and visits!  This is why we too bless God today.  He looks at us from on High and He reveals Himself on this Christmas that is at the door, with His saving love.  Let us open ourselves with gratitude, with hearts that are ready and welcoming to the gift of His coming.

 Come, Lord Jesus!

These elderly parents had dreamed and prepared for that day, but now they no longer expected it: they felt excluded, humiliated, disappointed. They had no children. Faced with the announcement of the birth of a son, Zachariah had remained incredulous, because the natural laws did not allow it; as a result, the Lord silenced him for all the time of gestation. But God does not depend on our logic and our limited human capacities. We must learn to trust and to be silent in the face of the mystery of God and to contemplate in humility and silence His work, which is revealed in history and which so often exceeds our imagination.
