Third Friday of Advent

 WORD of the DAY

When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the infant leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth, filled with the holy Spirit, cried out in a loud voice and said, “Most blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb.  And how does this happen to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?  For at the moment the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the infant in my womb leaped for joy.  Blessed are you who believed  that what was spoken to you by the Lord would be fulfilled”.    (Luke  1: 42-45)

How shall I live this Word?

This is the meeting of two expectant mothers.  This passage is filled with words of joy and blessedness.  John leaps for joy in his mother’s womb when he hears Mary’s voice.  The Virgin exults with joy when she hears herself recognized  as the Mother of the Messiah.  Thus an overflowing joy erupts from all of them as they recognize the great gifts of God.  He is a God who has come close and visits His people.  The visit of Mary to Elizabeth confirms the fulfillment of the promise that had traversed the centuries.  The star of hope is lit and illumines the world.

I too will exult with joy and thank the Lord for coming to live among us, under our tent.

The Voice of Pope St. Paul VI

Christ came to us through Mary.  We received Him through Her.  We meet Him, the flower of humanity, blossomed on the immaculate and virginal stem of Mary.  If we wish to be Christians, we must be Marian, that is, we need to recognize the essential, vital, providential rapport that unites the Madonna to Jesus and opens to us the path that leads to Him.
