Third Tuesday of Advent

 WORD of the DAY

Now this is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about. When his mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, but before they lived together, she was found with child through the holy Spirit.  Joseph her husband, since he was a righteous man, yet unwilling to expose her to shame, decided to divorce her quietly. (Matthew  1: 18-19)

How shall I live this Word?

Alongside the joy and the attraction of a unique announcement, the call to be the Mother of God, a sign of suffering begins for Mary.  Her maternity is mysterious and really incomprehensible.  Fortunately, Joseph is a righteous man and helped by a dream, takes Mary as his wife. Behind the reserved words of the Gospel account we can intuit a story of questions, of anxiety, of the negative gossip of the neighbors.  But Joseph and Mary entered into a total yes to God’s perspective and walked, notwithstanding the inevitable uncertainty, abandoning themselves to His will.

In prayer today, I will hand myself over to the Lord of my life and I will adore His holy will.

The Voice of Pope Saint Paul VI

The mystery of Christ is inserted in the divine design of human participation.  He came among us following the path of human generation.  He wanted to have a Mother.  He wanted to become incarnate through the life mystery of a woman, of a woman blest among all others.  Mary was not a merely passive instrument in God’s hands but cooperated in human salvation with free will and obedience.
