Week Nine of Ordinary Time

Commemoration of the IMMACULATE HEART OF MARY

 WORD of the DAY

Calling his disciples to himself, he said to them, “Amen, I say to you, this poor widow put in more than all the other contributors to the treasury. (Mark 12: 43)

How shall I live this Word?

A person lives in the measure that they know how to observe, that is, DISCERN reality, grasping the positive above all.  Jesus is the observer par excellence and He taught this important art to His disciples as well.  Now He is in the temple and He is observing a woman whose clothing reveals that she is a widow and poor.

Jesus sees her gesture of letting a few coins drop into the alms box that in all probability was the last of the money in her purse.  Almost at the same time, there arrives those rich persons, the scribes and pharisees, who liked to make a big show of their offerings as they did with any reality that could lend itself to arouse admiration for them on the part of the people.

Here we see the comparison that Jesus makes of the two almost simultaneous events that apparently had the same goal.  Instead, they are very different in the reality of the substance of the facts and of the evident intentions.  There is the resounding gesture that of itself would arouse great praise.  And there is the almost insignificant event because of the little that is given.

Jesus’ observation and words are splendid.  He grasps deeply the value, not of appearances, but of what is truly within what is happening.

Is not this the meaning and the value, and even the true flavor of life?

O Mary, on this day in which we remember Your Immaculate Heart, I ask You to convert my heart that is too often struck by what attracts and flatters with conspicuous appearances (also confirmed by so many extravagant expenses).   Make me a person of the essential: simple and moderate.  With Your pure heart, grant that I may know how to discern what is truly valuable in life and in people who may be poor in money, clothing, etc.  that are useless and costly.

Mary Most Holy is truly the mystical stairway on which the Son of God descended onto earth and on which we go up to Heaven.
