Week Nine of Ordinary Time

 WORD of the DAY

He is not God of the dead but of the living. You are greatly misled.

 (Mark 12: 27)

How shall I live this Word?

How far were from understanding this Gospel truth those who denounced Christianity as a religion of the dead!  Here the evangelist Mark proclaims how God is the God of the living and not of the dead.

Even the word cemetery provokes disgust in those who listen, even though the original Greek meaning was literally ‘dormitory’.  Yes, our dear departed have crossed the river of life to the other shore, but certainly not to immerse themselves in a dead reality.

The little child who was brought into the room to give a last greeting to her deceased grandmother was not mistaken when she placed her finger on her lips, asking for silence and said quietly, ‘my grandmother is sleeping’.

Looking at death as an interesting aspect of our beautiful life adventure makes the idea familiar to us that we too will experience it.  But we will not fall prey to deep sadness with its consequent depression that unfortunately devastates a large part of humanity.

I am struck by what Dietrich Bonhoeffer wrote during the Nazi persecution in Germany right before he was condemned to death.  “Jesus is here to tell me: I am the living one, conqueror of death”.  How can we not trust Him? (D. Bonhoeffer, the Fragility of evil…unpublished writings, Ed PMME p. 129).

Words and thoughts like this arouse this prayer in me: “Lord, make me strong in faith that becomes the certainty of resurrection and of eternal life with You”.

 The Voice of Charbel Makhlouf

Pray for the living, because the greater part of the living are dead, and the dead are alive.
