Week Eight of Ordinary Time

 WORD of the DAY

Since you have purified yourselves by obedience to the truth for sincere mutual love, love one another intensely from a [pure] heart.  You have been born anew, not from perishable but from imperishable seed, through the living and abiding word of God.    (1 Peter 1: 22-23)

How shall I live this Word?

The apostle Peter returns to talk about regeneration. This, moreover, is more understandable if one considers that, according to the majority of the exegetes, at least this first part of the letter constituted the text of an ancient homily for baptisms: and baptism is precisely the sacrament of regeneration.

Today, the apostle links the theme of regeneration to the image of the seed: in fact, in the living universe, the seed is the principle of every generation. All creatures generated in creation, however, are subject to corruption. This also applies to human life: the paternal seed from which we derive is corruptible, so that each of us is unavoidably destined to die.

But here, the sad chain of births and deaths can be interrupted because a seed of an immortal nature came into the world, the Word of God.

In the seed is already inscribed what the life that will derive from it is: in the Word, eternal life is already inscribed in God. As the Lord announced through the prophet Isaiah: “Listen and you will live!” (Is 55: 3).

Really listening to the Word of God means gradually becoming like God. Each seed produces plants, each according to its species: the Word of God generates children of God. If baptism is the birth of children of God, listening to the Word of God is like drinking the mother’s milk (cf 1 Pt 7: 2): it makes us grow until the full maturity of children of God. And the full maturity of children of God, the fruit of that seed which is the Word, is certainly this: intense fraternal love, of a pure heart.

Lord Jesus, help me to approach Your Word and grant that I may be regenerated through it in order to live the intense love for each other with a pure heart.

The voice of Silvano Fausti, Biblist

The gift of the Spirit is the freedom of the children who live a new existence, in the love of the Father and of their sisters and brothers.
