Fourth Monday of Easter

Fourth Monday of Easter, April 23, 2018

WORD of the DAY

I am the gate. Whoever enters through me will be saved and will come in and go out and find pasture. (John 10: 9)

How shall I live this Word?

Jesus says that to enter the fold of God, which is the space of freedom and true life, one must go through a gate. This gate was closed because of the ‘no’ that the man had said to God. This gate was also narrow, difficult to open, low, tiring for those who had tried to force it open. But it was the gate of life. Jesus opened it with the hard trial of His death on the cross. But here He further deepens the discourse by saying that the gate is He Himself. And it is an even more effective image in expressing the basic idea: Jesus is the meaning of existence: mine, yours, that of everyone. He is the meaning, the truest and noblest content, and the condition for orientation, and reaching the goal. Jesus gives meaning to our existence because He says that by going through where He has passed (passion, death but also resurrection) we fulfill ourselves and qualify life around us. Jesus is the content of our existence because He himself said: “I am life”; Jesus is the condition, the orientation to reach where He is to lead us with Himself to the Father in the strength-Love of the Spirit, in a climate of agility, freedom, and full life  ‘will come in, will come out, will find pasture’).

Today, in my pause for contemplation, I will ask the Holy Spirit to make these thoughts become the restful climate of my heart, certainty, and light to walk with a tranquil step and a serene soul in my daily life.

The voice of William Blake, English Poet

When the doors of perception open, all things appear as they really are: infinite.
