Third Tuesday of Easter

FRIENDS and SERVANTS of the WORD

Third Tuesday of Easter, April 17, 2018

 WORD of the DAY

So, they said to him, “Sir, give us this bread always.

Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me will never hunger, and whoever believes in me will never thirst”.    (John 6: 34-35)

How shall I live this Word?

Despite Jesus’ desire for the crowd to understand the sign of the bread in its essential meaning, the request still remains on a totally material level.  So, the Teacher corrects them and explains it again.  “I am the bread of life”.  It is an existential nourishment that takes away hunger from things and goods that are superfluous.

“Whoever comes to me will never hunger”.

It is the complete satisfaction of our most radical needs.  It is the source of a happiness that takes away the thirst for water that is murky and deluding.  It is the promise of a gift that endures and endures forever.  It is the simple and profound gift of a God who becomes bread for our life.

In my prayer today, I will say: Grant Lord that I may always hunger and thirst for You.  Grant me a pure heart so that I may find You in my daily life.

The voice of Pope John XXIII

This Easter time will be only one feast for me in which, calmer in the interior joy of my soul, I will come tasting Your sweetness and I will never depart from Your feast of love.
