WORD of the DAY

Whoever exalts himself will be humbled; but whoever humbles himself will be exalted.     (Mt. 23: 12)

How shall I live this Word?

We naturally look at reality from our vantage point.  The world, history, and time have ourselves as a point of reference!  And this is how we measure every other distance: we are bigger than … we are above … or vice versa. Presumption, envy, pride, selfishness, rancor, injustice often have their root in this fossilization of positions and findings.  We are the ones who received less but gave more, because these very ego-centered observations bring nothing but negative evidence, which emphasizes what we have not had, what we have missed or worse, what has been taken away from us, denied us.

Jesus knew that this dimension of our humanity needed to be evangelized so that we could be happy and above all fruitful. This is why He leaves us service, becoming servants as a new perspective. Looking at realities from outside ourselves, from below, committing ourselves to putting the other in the center, committing ourselves to looking at the other to start taking measures.  It is an exercise of strenuous reciprocity, which only if continuous and constant, can lead to recognize that we are all born from the same humus and that only if we humbly look at each other, can we meet in the other the image that allows us to understand each other and open ourselves to God.

Lord, in this time when many of us feel invaded by other unloved, undesired people, help us to change our gaze, evangelize our egocentrism.  Teach us to recognize each other as brothers and sisters.

The Message of Mother Teresa

The fruit of silence is prayer

The fruit of prayer is faith

The fruit of faith is love

The fruit of love is service

The fruit of service is peace.
