Week Three of Ordinary Time

WORD of the DAY

 Make known to me your ways, LORD;

teach me your paths.

 (Psalm 25)

How shall I live this Word?

The vocation of each of us is a tapestry of history, responsibility, promise, gift, God’s will and ours.  Nothing happens by chance.  Nothing is definite beforehand.  All becomes, embodies, and is transformed.

It becomes: every vocation is a story that develops, is rooted in a recognizable time and space. The call to be, to exist, is heard from conception, from birth, and being born; the call takes color for the earth, the community in which it takes place. And so, will continue to be heard, the call, in every phase of the evolution of each person, so that external events and internal choices will be combined according to the rule of biunivocal communication that starts from the beginning between the Creator and His creature and it is this that gives a profile to the experiences that make life.

It is embodied: the becoming of every vocation is realized continuously, crossing the folds of history, the features of the bodies, the choices that realize the desires, the fractures, the wounds that follow and that allow new needs to emerge, different possibilities.

It is transformed: every vocation never remains the same over time. Jonah must convert to convert Nineveh. Abraham must leave his land. The fishermen must leave the nets and their work; Peter also abandons his family, while John will never make one. Although all these were already in tune with their creator, in each of them the vocation that grew, transformed them and transformed the answer they were giving to God.

Lord, also in me, in us vocation is something that becomes, is embodied, and transformed. May our fears not stop it, not make it fossilized, not let it die. “Make us know your ways” is the constant invocation that we turn to You, to stay in communication with You, is our prayer to realize Your and our desires.

The Voice of Msgr. Vincent Paglia

The fishermen who knew only the routes of the lake, discover within themselves the map of the sky, of the world, of man. As I will follow you, Lord, because you advance towards the truth of man, increase the human, and make every step secure, leaving nothing but light behind. I will follow you, Lord, make me a seeker of deep heart, a fisher of light buried. I will follow you, even going along the road between the lake and my house, continuing to do my job, but I will do it in a bright and human way that perhaps will speak of You. I will follow You, because I am interested only in a trustworthy God who makes the human flourish.
