Week Two of Ordinary Time

WORD of the DAY

Then he said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. That is why the Son of Man is lord even of the Sabbath.” (Mark 2: 27-28)

How shall I live this Word?

For the Hebrew people, the Sabbath was not only an institution regarding worship.  It was thought of as a ‘space’, a time that was so sacred that it was the best occasion to live only in God, immersed in His Law.  Thus, it was an optimum opportunity.  However, beware of the interpretations that are contaminated with legalism, without a soul, and therefore often lacking in real humanity.

This is why Jesus forcefully clarifies that the ‘sabbath was made for man’, in the sense that it was thought of and wanted as an opportunity for time free of daily commitments that tires us more than necessary, and stops us from ‘breathing’ life, joy, and peace, immersed in God.  But remember, human beings have human needs; they are not to be turned into robots.  Jesus thus validates all that in the Bible is in favor of the good, that is useful for human vitality, from full humanity that is never detached from God.   Thus, Jesus can proclaim Himself, Lord of the Sabbath.

The Voice of Pope Francis

Those who isolate their conscience from the journey of God’s people, do not know the joy of the Holy Spirit who sustains hope.
