Week Two of Ordinary Time

WORD of the DAY

“Does the LORD delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices

as much as in obedience to the LORD’s command?

Obedience is better than sacrifice,

to listen, better than the fat of rams.”

(1 Samuel 15: 22)

How shall I live this Word?

We are in the atmosphere of the Old Covenant.  The priest Samuel speaks to Saul, who with the Lord’s help, won a great victory over the enemies of the people of Israel.  This great king, in the euphoria of his victory, overlooks what God had specifically asked and feels he is in place because he has offered huge holocausts and sacrifices.

This is not the direction, this is not the style of the covenant that God had made with the people He loves.  Rather, God asks them for obedience that is worth much more than holocausts and sacrifices because it is centered on God’s plan which is SALVATION.  Yes, inattention to the Lord’s Word (because it is His will) is like ‘losing the propeller’ of true peace.

It has been said that to obey You, Lord, is to reign.  And I understand this because You infinitely love us and can never ask us to obey, if it were not directed to what is true, good, and beautiful.  This is precisely what we are thirsting for in our depths.

The Voice of a contemporary Thinker

The more you obey God, living His commandments and the law of conscience, the more your life opens to horizons of truth, of what is good and beautiful.
