33rd Saturday in Ordinary Time

WORD of the DAY

Some Sadducees who argue that there is no resurrection, approached Jesus and put this question to him, “Master, Moses wrote for us, if a man’s married brother dies childless, the man must marry the widow to raise up children for his brother. Well then, there were seven brothers… Jesus replied, “The children of this world take wives and husbands, but those who are judged worthy of a place in the other world and in the resurrection from the dead do not marry because they can no longer die, for they are the same as the angels, and being children of the resurrection, they are children of God.  Some scribes then spoke up. They said, “Well put, Master.” They did not dare to ask Him any more questions. (Luke 20: 27-40)

How shall I live this Word?

Today’s Gospel shows us a group of Sadducees who want to embarrass Jesus by asking Him a captious question taken from the Levirate Law of Moses (Dt. 25: 5ss) with the story of a woman with seven husbands in the effort to put resurrection in a ridiculous light since the Sadducees did not believe in the resurrection after death. The question is facetious, talking of seven brothers who took the wife of their dead brother who had no children.

Jesus’ responds to this banal question with astuteness and wisdom.  Those who are judged worthy of resurrection from the dead do not marry because they can no longer die, for they are the same as the angels, being children of the resurrection.  They are called to live another existence that already begins on this earth in union with God and that continues into eternity.

Luke is addressing the Greek mentality which rejected the concept of the resurrection of the body.  Thus, Luke uses Jesus’ words to clarify that eternal life is the transfiguration of the body; it deals with an entirely new existence that does not deal with death but with life in God.

The Voice of the Liturgy

Life is not taken away from Your faithful ones but is transformed.
