30th Monday of Ordinary Time

WORD of the DAY

When Jesus saw her, he called to her and said, “Woman, you are set free of your infirmities.”  He laid hands on her, and she at once stood up straight and glorified God.

(Luke 13: 10-17)

How shall I live this Word?

Jesus is the epitome of compassion.  He sees!  He sees the suffering of others and in this instance as in others, does not wait to be asked.  Jesus initiates although He well knows that His enemies are lurking, just looking for an opportunity to accuse Him of wrongdoing.  This does not stop Him from doing the good He can and wishes to do to another.  He has no fear of what people may say or how they will interpret His actions.

In a word, Jesus does not have the human respect that stops Him from doing the will of His Father, that prevents Him from doing what is right.  And yes, He will pay the price as so many saints and holy people have done in imitation of Him.

We have two lessons here.  One is to ‘see’ those around us who are suffering in any way; a mother with her children who does not have enough to pay for her needed groceries at the check-out; a child who is abandoned; a beggar on the street; a sick neighbor; a migrant looking for shelter and work.  It is up to each of us to help them ‘stand up straight’.

Then there is the lesson about human respect.  We experience this when we refrain from saying a good and wholesome word; when we refrain from defending someone who is being bullied; when we neglect to do something to help a poor homeless person.  Let us see as Jesus saw and act as Jesus acted.  Let us be Jesus for others.

The Voice of the Servant of God Dorothy Day

Compassion is a word meaning – to suffer with.  If we will carry a little of the burden, it will be lightened.  If we share in the suffering of the world, then some will not have to endure so heavy an affliction.  It evens out.  What you do here in New York, in Harrisburg, helps those in China, India, South Africa, Europe, Russia, as well as in the oasis where you are.  You may think you are alone.  But we are members one of another.  We are children of God together.
