Feast of St. Francis of Assisi

26th Wednesday of Ordinary Time

WORD of the DAY

At that time Jesus said in reply, “I give praise to you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, for although you have hidden these things from the wise and the learned you have revealed them to the childlike. (Mt. 11: 25)

How shall I live this Word?

This passage of Matthew’s Gospel reports the Word of Jesus regarding a truth that can illumine our entire existence.  This is how it was for St. Francis of Assisi who not only was a light and glory for Italy, but for the whole world.  His Canticle of the Creatures joyfully lists so many praises of God that it has inspired not only faithful Christians, but musicians, artists, authors of every time and place.  Precisely in these evangelical words we find the deep sense of a person in whom simplicity and total abandonment to God coincide.

Yes, it is like the “child” who is the image used by Jesus and set like precious pearls in the Gospel.  Thus, the wisdom of God finds in this image the true expression that still today and always will guide our spiritual journey.  Human wisdom and shrewdness lead nowhere, instead, they often lead to mortal danger.

Thank You, my Lord!  Through the intercession of St. Francis, I ask You to grant that my life may be a prolongation of his Canticle of Praise to You for all that is true, good, and beautiful.

The Voice of St. Francis of Assisi

Oh Lord, make me an instrument of Your Peace.

Where there is hatred, let me bring Love

Where there is offense, let me bring Pardon

Where there is discord, let me bring Faith

Where there is error, let me bring Truth

Where there is despair, let me bring Hope

Where there is sadness, let me bring Joy

Where there is darkness, let me bring Light.
