Friday of Week X in Ordinary Time

WORD of the DAY

But we hold this treasure* in earthen vessels, that the surpassing power may be of God and not from us. (2 Corinthians: 4: 7)

How shall I live this Word

We can put many things in earthen vessels, even precious jewels.  If you are not attentive in moving it, it can crash to the ground and break.  Thus, the clay vase is the image of our condition as creatures who are very fragile.  However, the treasure that is in this clay vessel that we are, is SANCTIFYING GRACE,  the indwelling of God Himself who gives extraordinary value and greatness to who we are and what we do.  Certainly, it cannot happen that sin totally annihilates this marvel because it is the power of God that is at work and comes from Him and not from us.

Humility coincides with this known truth.  We must always keep in mind that everything comes from God, all that is good, true, beautiful.

In Jesus’ name we give thanks.  Jesus is the continual thank you to the Father.  The song, the purest praise of the eternal and joyous hymn to the Father is the Word, is Jesus.  we are created for this: to be a drop that reflects and praises the Father through Jesus.

The Voice of Fr. Andrea Santoro, martyred on February 5, 2006 at Trabazon

We must admit that we are broken clay vessels.  Much has been entrusted to us, but in our human fragility, we have let much of this go lost.  On the other hand, we know that the Lord uses fragile vessels as the providential instruments of His plan of salvation.  We can be sure that the treasure that is given to us, will shine, even if we are clay vessels.
