Ninth Saturday in Ordinary time

June 10, 2017

Saturday of Week IX in Ordinary Time

WORD of the DAY

Calling his disciples to himself, he said to them, “Amen, I say to you, this poor widow put in more than all the other contributors to the treasury.  For they have all contributed from their surplus wealth, but she, from her poverty, has contributed all she had, her whole livelihood.    (Mark 12: 43-44)

How shall I live this Word

Today we see many groups throughout the world who work for the good of others; many persons who take on the task of donating and helping the neediest.  However, at times this help comes with the aim of being esteemed and honored by others or has the aim of earning fame and money.  This is not charity.

The charity that pleases God is full of humility, without any self-complacency.  We must esteem all the actions in which humility and charity are united because in them charity is safeguarded by humility and humility is not empty, but serves charity.  The widow gave everything she had, without holding back anything for herself;  hers was true charity that dares and hopes in God alone.

Lord, help me to do real charity for love of You and my sisters and brothers without any ulterior motives.

The Voice of Mother Teresa of Calcutta

There is no worse poverty than not having love to give.
