Ninth Thursday of Ordinary Time

June 8, 2017

Thursday of Week IX in Ordinary Time

WORD of the DAY

One of the scribes,  when he came forward and heard them disputing and saw how well he had answered them, asked him, “Which is the first of all the commandments?”  Jesus replied, “The first is this: ‘Hear, O Israel! The Lord our God is Lord alone!  You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.  The second is this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these. (Mark 12: 28-31)

How shall I live this Word

Love of God is a gift and a response.  He loved us first and His love is present in us, thus it is a gift before being a commandment; it is a desire before being a law.  God loves us and we have in our heart this capacity to respond with all that we are: soul, mind, strength.  The Love of God is the principle of life.  We love, thus we live and possess the love of others with the love that lives in us, that is, with the same love of God.

It is a gift and also a responsibility.  It seems that humans have forgotten this deep desire of theirs and today there are disasters that show the lack of love.  But it is not the end.  Egoism and indifference do not have the last word, but love that is present because God is present.

Lord, teach me to love as You love.

The Voice of Chiara Lubich

The true love that Jesus wants does not allow discrimination; it does not distinguish between people who are nice and those who are troublesome, nor those who are lovely or ugly, or great or small.  Through this love, there are not those of my country and the alien; those of my Church or another; of my religion or another.  Everyone is loved with this love.  This is how we must love…love everyone.
