Sixth Monday of Eastertide

May 22, 2017

WORD of the DAY

When the Advocate comes whom I will send you from the Father, the Spirit of truth that proceeds from the Father, he will testify to me.  And you also testify, because you have been with me from the beginning.    (John 15 : 26-27)

How shall I live this Word?

The Greek word Paraclete means Advocate, the one who assists and supports in the process.  He is the advocate- defender who opposes the accuser (Satan).   The Spirit is sent by the Father and is also sent by the Son.  This gift of Love is the living memory of God in us.  He speaks first; He precedes us, He guards us, and He witnesses for us.

Help us Lord to open our heart to the Spirit to be strengthened in Your love, and grant us a free mind that lets Your Light enter it in all its fullness.

The Voice of Joseph Dossetti, Witness

There is ‘Satan’, which in Hebrew means ‘accuser’.  It is the world in the terms of John, that continually says to the disciple, ‘you are mistaken; it is not worth it; there is no joy here; you can’t do it”.  Instead, the Holy Spirit defends and consoles.  His principal argument is precisely to remind the disciples of Jesus’ Word; introduce them into the meaning of that word, the love of a God, crucified at the gate of Jerusalem…we need men and women who are not afraid of evil.  They have been reconciled with evil which they know is present in them because they have experienced forgiveness.  But we also need men and women who are not afraid of the good; who know how to dare, risk, obeying the Word that is present in the center of their spirit.  Love is like this: it wants everything.  Only this folly can reveal true wisdom.
