Fifth Friday of Eastertide

May 19, 2017

WORD of the DAY

This is my commandment: love one another as I love you.   (John 15 : 12)

How shall I live this Word?

Jesus leaves His disciples the greatest commandment by which they will be recognized as His followers: love each other.  Friendship, in all its various forms, has always been esteemed among all peoples.  What unites friends is, above all, the search for the true, the beautiful, the good.  Christ called His disciples ‘friends’ after having shared His life and His teachings, and had given them the greatest sign by His sacrifice on the cross.

Friendship overcomes all barriers – ethnic, language, social, etc. – rather it unites in heart and in spirit and this is why we can respect each other and love each other and be truly ‘catholic’, that is universal.

Jesus gave us the most sublime example of this friendship by giving His life to save us, because, as He Himself said, “There is no greater love than to give one’s life for one’s friends”.

Lord, grant me a gratuitous friendship that knows how to see in every person ‘a friend’ to honor and to love.

The Voice of Cicero, a great orator

Those who eliminate friendship from life, eliminate the sun from the earth.
