SECOND WEDNESDAY OF EASTERTIDE

WORD of the DAY

And this is the verdict that the light came into the world, but people preferred darkness to light, because their works were evil.  For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come toward the light, so that his works might not be exposed. But whoever lives the truth comes to the light, so that his works may be clearly seen as done in God.  (John  3: 19-21)

How shall I live this Word?

The Light is among us and it is Jesus’ ongoing presence that uncovers our works; but sometimes there are those who resist the good and seek the darkness because they cannot stand the beauty of the truth.  There are only two possibilities to make the darkness disappear; either we become totally dark so that we can no longer see the shadows or we become light.

To be light means accepting Jesus and His truth.  “Whoever loves the truth comes to the light, so that their works may be clearly seen as done in God”.

According to the way of thinking of our Western culture, truth is a notion to be learned intellectually.  For the Biblical world instead, it is God’s plan of salvation to receive in our life and to build together with Him.

Lord, make me truth, make me light; this is what I want but only with You can I live fully and truly as You illumine the darkness of my life.

The Voice of Pope Benedict XVI to the Permanent Deacons of Rome: February 18, 2006

Proclaiming the Gospel, you can give the Word capable of illumining and bringing meaning to human work, to the suffering of the sick, and you will help the new generations to discover the beauty of the Christian faith.  In this way, you will be deacons of the Truth that makes us free,  and will lead the inhabitants of this city to encounter Jesus Christ.  Receiving Jesus in our life is for human beings the source of profound joy, a joy that brings peace even in times of trial.  Therefore, be servants of the Truth in order to be bearers of the joy that God wants to give to human beings.
