SECOND TUESDAY OF EASTERTIDE

WORD of the DAY

He said to them, “Go into the whole world and proclaim the gospel to every creature.  Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved; whoever does not believe will be condemned.  These signs will accompany those who believe: in my name they will drive out demons, they will speak new languages.  They will pick up serpents [with their hands], and if they drink any deadly thing, it will not harm them. They will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.      (Mark  16: 15-18)

How shall I live this Word?

The mission that the Risen Jesus entrusts to us is His own mission; the signs that accompany this task are the same ones Jesus had accomplished in His life.  Now we are His witnesses and we proclaim salvation in His Name; we who have believed and have been saved through Him.  Those who have received salvation cannot stand still.  Salvation leads to movement in the continual newness that is the very mandate of Christ.

The Church becomes missionary with the invitation of the Risen Christ: “Go! Proclaim!”  We too are involved in this!  To be missionary is the essence of the Christian.  This missionary mandate of Jesus begins with the verb ‘go’ and the disciples ‘went out proclaiming everywhere.  The mission always presupposes going out of ourselves as well, from our own world, from our own interests, to adventure into new sectors, among new people.  Our Pope Francis has often reminded us of this with his characteristic expression that has become proverbial: “the outgoing Church”.

Lord, help us to go out of ourselves to bring Your proclamation to all our sisters and brothers, beginning with the confines of our dear ones.
