HOLY THURSDAY

WORD of the DAY

Fully aware that the Father had put everything into his power and that he had come from God and was returning to God, he rose from supper and took off his outer garments. He took a towel and tied it around his waist. Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet   and dry them with the towel around his waist.                                              (JOHN 13: 3-5)

How shall I live this Word?

John underlines the awareness and foreknowledge of Jesus.  The words ‘fully aware’, lead us to ask, aware of what?  Jesus knew His destiny, that His hour had come to pass from this world.  He knew His power and His responsibility that the Father had placed in His hands.  He knew His origin and the end of His journey; that He came from God and was going back to God.  In commenting on this Gospel, Cardinal Martini concludes: “It seems to me that this is the principle and foundation on which we can understand His whole Passion: the new exodus, in full awareness on the part of Jesus”.

Precisely this full awareness of His mission makes Him the Lord of the events and endows greatness even on the washing of the feet.  At the end of this humble gesture, He can say to His own: “I have given you a model to follow, so that as I have done for you, you should also do.”  And we who want to follow Him, today feel the relevance of this command.

The voice of the Liturgy – Entrance Antiphon  (John 13: 1)

Jesus knew that His hour had come to pass from this world…He loved His own in the world and He loved them to the end.
