Fifth Tuesday of Lent

WORD of the DAY

When you lift up the Son of Man, then you will realize that I AM, and that I do nothing on my own, but I say only what the Father taught me.  (John 8:28)

How shall I live this Word?

In today’s Gospel, Jesus begins by saying that where He is going, His listeners cannot follow; in fact, they cannot follow Jesus if they remain in their sins; if they refuse Him as the one sent by God.  According to St. John, this is one of the worst sins because with it we distance ourselves from God, the source of all holiness.

Jesus then specifies that if they do not believe in His self-presentation as “I AM”, they will die  in their sins.  The words, “I AM” immediately recall the revelation that God made to Moses in the burning bush (Cf. Exodus 3: 6).  Therefore, Jesus presents Himself as the God who accompanies His people in the new exodus toward Easter, acting like a new Moses, freeing us from slavery to sin and leading us to salvation, passing through His passion, death, and resurrection.  It is necessary to believe in Him for this passage to occur, follow His teachings, take Him as our life model.

O, Lord, grant that I may follow You and believe that You are the Son of God.

The voice of the First Preface of the Lord’s Passion

O God, you renew the universe and give us the true meaning of Your glory; in the mysterious power of the cross, You judge the world and make the regal power of Christ Crucified shine forth.
