Second Sunday in Ordinary Time

 WORD of the DAY

The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God,  who takes away the sin of the world.  He is the one of whom I said,  ‘A man is coming after me who ranks ahead of me because he existed before me.’ I did not know him,  but the reason why I came baptizing with water was that he might be made known to Israel.”  John testified further, saying, “I saw the Spirit come down like a dove from the sky and remain upon him.    (John 1: 29-32)

How shall I live this Word?jesus-baptism

John simply wishes to be the ‘voice’ of the One who is to come.  He takes attention away from himself to concentrate it on Jesus.  “I did not know him”.  Three times the precursor, the one who prepared the way, stresses the distance between himself and the One who comes.  However, he waits for Him, even if he does not know Him.  But you can know Him because you wait for Him.  We only know what we love!

Let us remain waiting each day and ask Jesus to be able to know Him intimately in order to be His sacraments, His Gospel.

The Voice of Pierre Emmanuel, religious

One beautiful day, the precursor meets the One whom he announces, Who was, Who is, and Who comes.

One beautiful day, it is really a beautiful day, he finds Him before him, face to face, before a man like us, before the Being from whom he receives his being, the Eternal in him.  This is the Gospel for everyone.
