WORD of the DAY
Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, heartfelt compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience, bearing with one another and forgiving one another, if one has a grievance against another; as the Lord has forgiven you, so must you also do. And over all these put on love, that is, the bond of perfection. And let the peace of Christ control your hearts, the peace into which you were also called in one body. And be thankful. (Col 3,12-15)
As 2016 comes to its close, the Word of God illumines us so that we can live in beauty as we end of 2016 and begin 2017. Paul exhorts the inhabitants of Colossus, and ancient city of Phrygia, to live the new life Christ as clothing that makes us ever more aware of having been chosen by God, loved by Him for an existence where the tangle of negative feelings is entirely substituted by a consistent fabric, truly fit for human beings. It is the fabric of eminently positive sentiments: compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. He wanted to write all these because they are the ‘cloth’ of the indispensable characteristics of a life that is really human and therefore, one of relationships.
It is urgent today that these sentiments be carefully cultivated in the family. We are all aware what the ‘earthquake’ of crisis in Couples today creates among the young, the adults, and the aged and has become an endemic malaise that needs the true doctor: Christ Jesus. He accompanies us in the journey of forgiveness and of peace without which everything falls apart.
How lovely it is to know families whose members have the ‘new clothing’ of these sentiments which, in substance, make life and the world new. We know many who are in Heaven. Let us praise God together with them.
Lord, dress us in Your grace which is a daily inundation of Your Word read, meditated, contemplated in those moments which we all know how to find once we realize that it is only by loving that we live.
Yes, the love that comes from You, invades the world and all who are ‘clothed’ in Your way of relating with the Father and each sister and brother who opens their heart to Your Word and lives it.
The Voice of Pope Francis
The Church must be vigilant and prompt in individuating new works of mercy and implementing them with generosity and enthusiasm (Apostolic Letter Mercy and Peace No. 19).
