27th Sunday of Ordinary Time October 2, 2016

From the Word of the Day

The prophecy that Habakkuk the prophet received.  (Habakkuk 1: 1-4; 2:2-4)

How long, Lord, must I call for help, but you do not listen?  Or cry out to you, “Violence!”  But you do not save? Why do you make me look at injustice? Why do you tolerate wrongdoing? Destruction and violence are before me; there is strife, and conflict abounds. Therefore the law is paralyzed, and justice never prevails. The wicked hem in the righteous, so that justice is perverted.

Then the Lord replied: “Write down the revelation and make it plain on tablets so that a herald may run with it.  For the revelation awaits an appointed time speaking of the end and will not prove false. Though it linger, wait for it; it will certainly come and will not delay.  “See, the enemy is puffed up;   his desires are not upright; the righteous person will live by his faithfulness.

The prophet Habakkuk lived at the end of the 7th century before Christ.  The times were very hard because of the continual invasions of the Babylonian Assyrians.  However, he remained faithful to the true God and his brief but intense prophetic writings are still valid today.  They persuade us that fidelity to God is fundamental for the life of the believer who, because of it, will be given the vision of God’s fidelity.

In the picture Habakkuk gives of his times, he describes situations that unfortunately are repeated over the passage of time.  This is a description of what was happening then: “the law is paralyzed and justice never prevails.  The wicked hem in the righteous, so that justice is perverted”.

After he had dared to question God, Habakkuk then presents God’s answer in Chapter 2.  He writes the vision on tablets so that they can be easily read.  It is a vision that marks an end. It speaks of an appointed time and will not prove false.  Though it lingers, wait, for it will come and will not delay.  The enemy is puffed up and will not survive.  The righteous person will live by his faithfulness.

Lord, I understand more and more that faith leads to a life that is continually directed to God, believing and trusting His Word.  Help me to be faithful to Your Word.
