Third Sunday of Easter

From the Word of the Day

They saw Jesus on the shore of the lake.   (John 6: 19)

How should we live this Word151883

Jesus shows Himself to His disciples for the third time.  He is on the shore of the lake and cooks fish for them.  He presents Himself as someone who puts Himself at the service of others because He loves them.  He asks of Peter, who had denied Him three times, a triple profession of love.  Therefore, notwithstanding his grave sin, Jesus remains faithful to His choice of placing Peter as first among  the Apostles and as the ‘rock’ on which to found His Church.

This is a very consoling and encouraging reality even for us.  It makes us aware that even if we sin and then repent, God does not remember our sin but, full of mercy, He allows us to re-model our image on that of God.  Let us repeat our gratitude with Peter, saying to Jesus: “Lord, You know everything; You know that I love You” (John 21: 16).

The Voice of Pope Francis

God is greater than our sin.  His love is an ocean in which we can immerse ourselves without fear of being drowned.  Forgiveness for God means giving us the certainty that He will never abandon us.  (General Audience, March 30, 2016)
