CHRISTMAS EVE

From the Word of the Day

“Zechariah his father, filled with the Holy Spirit, prophesied, saying:  Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel; for he has come to his people and set them free.  He has raised up for us a mighty Savior, born of the house of his servant David.  Through his prophets he promised of old that he would save us from our enemies, from the hand of all who hate us.  He promised to show mercy to our fathers, and to remember his holy covenant.  This was the oath he swore to our father Abraham:  he set us free from the hand of our enemies, free to worship him without fear, all the days of our life.”

(Luke 1: 67-79)

How should we live this Word 122507_lead_today[1]

Today is the vigil!  The Gospel places on our lips the hymn of joy of the elderly priest, Zachariah.  Like a sentinel, he sees and greets the first light of morn, “the dawn from on high that will break upon us, to shine on those who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death, and to guide our feet into the way of peace”.

Zechariah, who was made mute by his disbelief, now breaks into this song of praise guided by the Holy Spirit, lending his voice to all of salvation history because Yahweh does grace and mercy.  It praises God who visits his people, bringing redemption and salvation, life and hope, reconciliation and peace!  History past, present and future look to the Messiah.  We are all awaiting His coming that will brighten our life and will reconcile Heaven and earth.

In my pause for silent contemplation, I will join in with my praise of God for the great gift of Jesus!

You alone do we wait for; You alone do we seek.  You are our Peace!

The Voice of Suenens

Peace among the people arises from the glory they give to God.  The glory of God is the only true peace among us.  On Christmas night, let us kneel before God made human among humans and we will perform the most direct, most constructive, most creative action of human fraternity.
