Fourth Wednesday of Advent

From the Word of the Day

“When the time arrived for Elizabeth to have her child she gave birth to a son.  Her neighbors and relatives heard that the Lord had shown his great mercy toward her, and they rejoiced with her.  When the time came on the eighth day to circumcise the child, they were going to call him Zechariah after his father, but his mother said in reply, ‘No, He will be called John.  But they said to her, ‘There is no one among your relatives who has this name’.  So they made signs asking his father what he wished him to be called.  He asked for a tablet and wrote, John is his name, and all were amazed.”

(Luke 1: 57-63)

How should we live this WordFwpainti[1]

He will be called John, that is, Yahweh does grace and mercy.  Elizabeth entered into the great plan of God’s Providence and recognizes her experience as the source of mercy and grace.  This son of the promise made to Zechariah changes the life of this couple already advanced in years and transforms them into disciples of mercy and of grace so that when asked about the name of their son, Elizabeth first, and then Zechariah respond as the angle had suggested: “Yahweh does grace and mercy”.  They become witnesses to the Goodness of God!  And this generates great marvel in everyone.  God in His Love is Eternal novelty and awe!

“Lo, I am sending my messenger to prepare the way before me!” (Malachi)  and his name is Yahweh does Mercy/Grace.   God’s Grace and Mercy always go before us.  The Lord gives us the eyes of faith to recognize His presence in the folds of Life and leads us into this Christmas of Mercy to the true encounter with the Divine Babe.

In my pause for silent contemplation, I will thank God for the great gift of His Mercy and Grace!

Let us be awed by God as Pope Francis suggests!
