31st Wednesday in Ordinary Time

From the Word of the Day

“Brothers and sisters owe nothing to anyone, except to love one another; for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law…Love does no evil to the neighbor; hence, love is the fulfillment of the law.”

(Romans 12: 8-16)

How should we live this Wordcommunity

Narsai of Edessa the theologian, commenting on this passage, writes: “You seek to be just and good; do to others what you desire be done to you.  You want to receive the wages for your labor on the day of recompense, then pay your neighbor the debt of love.

St Paul insists by affirming that love is the fulfillment of the Law.  It deals with a debt that cannot be fully repaid, but one that we must never tire paying.  Reciprocal love is also the heart of the Golden Rule, the common message of various religions rendered concrete in the life of Christ in His complete and absolute gift of Himself to us in His Passion and Resurrection.

In my pause for silent contemplation, I will ask Jesus to fill my heart with love for Him and for every person and all of His creation.

Jesus, grant me Your heart to love with.

The Voice of Edith Stein, Philosopher, Carmelite, Martyr

Reciprocal love is at the same time love of self; it is a yes said to one’s being and one’s person.
