29th Friday in Ordinary Time

From the Word of the Day

“You know how to interpret the appearance of the earth and the sky; why do you not know how to interpret the present time.”

(Luke 12: 56-57)

How should we live this Word2012100024lonetreehills99zz

Jesus is once again speaking to the crowds.  The tone quickly becomes harsh and reproving.  The crowds like to listen to Jesus; they like His miracles, the cures, the multiplication of the bread.  However, those words, those signs remain basically inefficacious because the people in the crowds do not mature into an effective personal conversion.  Jesus wants to shake them up and begins speaking of the shared intelligence that allows us to interpret the signs of the weather.  But why doesn’t this same intelligence lead us to value the signs of God’s Kingdom that is coming as well?  Why don’t they create assumptions about recognizing the Messiah and begin the interior change that is truly conversion?  Jesus calls hypocrites those who do not use their intelligence for the signs of the Kingdom.  This hypocrisy hides the unwillingness to take responsibility for recognizing and distinguishing what is right from what is wrong, above all when this means going against the current.

In my pause for silent contemplation, I will open my mind and heart to the signs of the Kingdom that God sends me throughout my day.

Lord, do not allow my intelligence to be pervaded by egoism and cynicism.  Let me desire to recognize and receive Your Kingdom that is coming.

 The Voice of Pope Francis

Jesus asks us to think freely, to think in order to understand what is happening.  However, the basic truth is that by ourselves we cannot!  We need the Lord’s help.  Only in this way can we understand the signs of the times.  The Holy Spirit gives us this gift; the intelligence to understand, and not because others tell me what is happening.
