Ninth Monday of Ordinary Time

From the Word of the Day

“Have you not read this Scripture passage, ‘The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone; by the Lord has this been done’.”            (Mark 12: 10)

How should we live this Word

Mark locates this passage at the end of a very strong parable, that of the vine-dressers who live their dishonesty to the nth degree, not only by cheating the owner, first killing his servants, they then kill the ‘beloved son’.

The evangelist says clearly that Jesus was addressing the ‘chief priests, scribes, and elders of the people’ that is, the elite of the great ones of His times.  The parable is very dramatic.  The vine-dresserworkers of the vineyard 1 assassins receive the merited punishment from the owner.   However, the parable then ends with words from Scripture evoked by Jesus as though to confirm the truth with convincing power.  He, the expert builder of houses, gets rid of the stones that do not give evidence of solidity, and chooses the right one for the corner stone.  Notice, it is precisely the one that the incompetence and foolishness of the pseudo builders had thrown away!

It is almost like another short parable at the conclusion of the one of the vine-dressers.  But the leaders are so opposed to Jesus that their anger increases against Him who had spoken to them so frankly.  We joyfully appreciate the teaching.

Yes, the cornerstone is Jesus.  On Him, who was sent by the Father, on His Word read and prayed each day, we build the house of our life.  There will be those who oppose us in one way or another, and laws are still enacted in the places that want to eliminate Jesus and His Gospel.

In my pause for silent contemplation, I will relish the words of Jesus and ask for courage to stand with Him no matter how much opposition I may find.

Jesus, help me to build the ‘house’ of my life on You and on Your Word.
