Fifth Saturday of Easter

From the Word of the Day

“If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you.  If they kept my word, they will also keep yours.  And they will do all these things to you on account of my name, because they do not know the one who sent me.”

(John 15: 20)

How should we live this WordimagesCAKZ3W95

Jesus affirms that men have persecuted Him and they will do the same to those who want to follow Him on the way of truth and of love.  Those who live the Gospel will find hostility on the part of unbelievers, by those who oppress the poor, or are fanatics of another religion.  They will be humiliated, oppressed, and sometimes savagely killed, in a world that has usurped God’s place and even think they are killing in the name of God –what a horrible idea!

We see much restlessness and indifference on the part of public opinion and of many institutions that like Pilate ‘wash their hands’.  We see martyrdom and the courageous witness of many Christians.  Unfortunately, we experience the power of evil.  But we also experience the power and heroism of those who remain faithful to God and to His love always, even at the price of their life.

In my pause for silent contemplation, I will pray for the persecuted Christians of the world and ask for the courage to accept persecution for the name of Jesus.

O Lord, grant that my witness as a Christian may be always true and credible, knowing how to face the darkness of those who do not tolerate the light.  Help me to bring love where there is only hatred.

The Voice of the Writings of Early Church Fathers during Persecutions

Christians love everyone and they are persecuted by everyone.  They are not known and they are condemned.  They are given death and they receive life from it.  They are insulted and they bless.  They are treated with insolence and they behave with reverence.  They do good and are punished like criminals; punished they rejoice as though given life.
