Second Thursday of Lent

From the Word of the Day

“If someone from the dead goes to them, they will repent”. Then Abraham said, “If they will not listen to Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded if someone should rise from the dead”.

 (Luke 16: 30-31)

How should we live this WordJesus appears

This is what Jesus highlights in this parable.  The rich man wants to warn his living brothers and he thinks that if someone comes back from the dead, it could convince them better.  But Abraham responds laconically.   Obstinacy in continuing negative attitudes would make the appearance of someone resurrected ineffective.  This is precisely what happens after Jesus’ resurrection. How many times Jesus tried to prepare His disciples for the resurrection!  He announced it with words; anticipated it with the Transfiguration and some miracles that restored life; He inserted it into parables.  The resurrection is a stumbling block and Jesus knows this; even more so, when it deals with an unjust death, with sufferings inflicted on a good person.  Jesus also speaks of this and this already scandalizes and irritates the disciples.   But they just cannot accept the idea of resurrection!

Then what is effective?  Certainly it is not the mediations in themselves, but rather the continuous and dynamic internal synergy that we choose to create in ourselves between intelligence, will, the capacity to face ourselves, accepting the restitution others make to us, and humility before God and others.  These are the basic dimensions of rational and relational activities of persons, which we also call Gifts of the Holy Spirit!

It is the daily action of the Holy Spirit is us and with us.  To live in a fully human way, without negating or twisting or making absolute any of our dimensions allows the Holy Spirit to act, to render His divine inhabitation active, and to pervade and shape our humanity.  Then there is no need to wait for someone to come back from the dead.  Resurrection already happens in our humanity and we live as those redeemed and risen.

In my pause for silent contemplation, I will ponder this scene and ask Jesus to help me live the reality of His Resurrection in my life each day.

Lord, Your grace leads me into the experience of awareness that I are inhabited by You.  Help me to live the resurrection as a dimension already present in my life.

The Voice of Saint John Paul II, 1989

The Resurrection fully accomplished the Redeemer’s Plan of Salvation, the unlimited effusion of love on human beings.  Now it is up to the Holy Spirit to involve every individual in this plan of love. This is why there is a close connection between Christ’s mission and the Holy Spirit’s Gift promised to the apostles before the Passion, as the fruit of the sacrifice of the Cross.
