First Wednesday of Lent

From the Word of the Day

“At the judgment, the men of Nineveh will arise with this generation and condemn it, because at the preaching of Jonah they repented, and there is something greater than Jonah here.”

 (Luke 11: 32)

How should we live this Wordpharisees-question-jesus-744x492[1]

Lent demands penance and conversion.  Jesus recounts how the people of Nineveh changed their life at Jonah’s preaching.  In the face of the Jews who asked for signs and miracles, Jesus responds that the greatest sign will be that of Jonah, alluding to His resurrection on the third day.  Yet, He knows they refuse to listen to Him even though they are in the presence of one greater than Jonah who preached to the inhabitants of Nineveh and obtained their conversion.  He is even greater than Solomon to whom the queen of the south came from the ends of the earth to hear his wisdom.

Let us go to Jesus who, through the Church, invites us to conversion and gives us the gift of divine wisdom.  Let us not remain deaf to His Word.  Let us not ask for outstanding signs so that we will not be an evil generation who does not allow itself to be convinced and closes itself in its prejudices.Lent demands penance and conversion.

Today in my pause for silent contemplation, I will ask Jesus to help me see the many signs all around me of His loving presence and I will thank Him.

Lord, do not allow me to fall into the temptation of asking for small or great signs to open myself to Your Word. Open my eyes to the miracles that I see each day: life, light, beauty, harmony, love…

The Voice of Madeleine Delbrel, Contemporary Mystic

Conversion happens on a decisive day that takes from us what we know of our life because, face to face with God, God tells us what He thinks of it and what He wants to do with it.  In that moment, God becomes extremely important for us, more than anything, more that every life, even and above all, our own.
