Third Monday in Ordinary Time

From the Word of the Day

“Into whatever house you enter, first say, ‘Peace to this household’.”

(Luke 10: 5)

How should we live this Wordsending

The first rule is ‘to go’.  Jesus contextualizes every suggestion on what to say and do within a movement.  The disciples go to people, enter their homes.  They do not expect people to look for them.  Those who need the Good News sometimes are not aware of their need.  Those who have Good News must bring it where it has not yet arrived. In Luke’s Gospel today, for the feast of Timothy and Titus, we read all the advice that Jesus left to His own for bringing the Good News.  It is a bit like the ‘missionary rulebook’ for the evangelizer!

The second rule is to go simply, without pretexts or expectations of being welcomed, loved, acknowledged, or receiving recompense for their presence.

The third rule is to present oneself in peace, bringing peace!  If peace is refused, leave.  Do not even begin and do not provoke or exasperate.  Peace is the premise to receive the Good News.  Peace is a beginning that we find in ourselves as a gift and that can increase only through our interaction with others. Peace grows by sharing it, living and working together.  Then it is possible and becomes a synonym for harmony, availability to meet others, without exaggerated pretexts or expectations toward self or others.  However, peace is difficult.  It is enough to refuse it to stop its ulterior development.

Today in my pause for silent contemplation, I will ask Jesus to help me be a peaceful person with everyone.

Lord, let there be peace in our homes, in our communities.  Let it be a peace that is the absence of fears, of laziness, of envy, and of jealousy.  May it be a peace that seeks to change, to grow, loving and bringing life, Your life, everywhere.

The peace we dream of will be possible the day in which there is a different attitude in our hearts.
