From the Word of the Day

“On coming up out of the water he saw the heavens being torn open and the Spirit, like a dove, descending upon him.  And a voice came from the heavens, ‘You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased’.”

(Mark 1: 10-11)

How should we live this Wordjesus-baptism

Behold, the man Jesus who comes out of the waters like all those who had entered it to receive the baptism of repentance, and  now is fully aware that He and not the others, has come to baptize,’ not with water but with the Holy Spirit’.  The manifestation is simple but profound.  A dove evokes the presence of the Holy Spirit, whose action is always very discreet and reserved in the life of those who truly believe.  And there is a ‘voice from heaven’, the voice of the Father recognizes in Jesus His Son par excellence, object of His pleasure bespeaking an inexpressible infinite Love toward Him.  Our life as Christians is immersed in this certainty:  this ineffable Love of the Father for the Son is not only responded to by Him, but envelopes each of us as well who live our own Baptism.
Today closes the Christmas liturgical cycle.  On this feast of the Baptism of Jesus, the evangelists narrate an extremely important fact.  For thirty years, Jesus had led a totally ordinary life in the home and shop of Joseph, the carpenter of Nazareth whom the people considered His father.  But now this is the hour in which the humanity of Jesus is invested from on high and brought into the Spirit’s vortex, within the reality-fire of the Most Blessed Trinity.

Today in my pause for silent contemplation, I will ask the Holy Spirit to re-appropriate my Baptism in the full awareness of this limitless love.  I will open myself to the delicate action of the Holy Spirit and ask Him to make me conscious of being a child of God in the Son par excellence – Jesus.  I will breathe in my heart, “Abba Father!” It is the cry of Jesus and mine as well, Father, Father!

Jesus, I believe that every kind of natural fruitfulness in Your Spirit is transfigured and divinized in You.  I believe, Lord, that every kind of sterility is conquered and canceled as long as I fully receive Your love and enter into the Newness of love with You, and everyone who knocks at my heart.

The Voice of Saint Hilary of Poitiers

All that happened in Christ helps us understand that after His immersion in the water (of baptism), the Holy Spirit came on us from the highest Heaven and that, adopted by the Father’s Voice, we become children of God.
